Young carers petition hand in to the Department for Education

Last week young carers handed in over 1800 Fair Start signatures to the Department for Education asking the government to include young carers in the criteria for Pupil Premium. Thank you for adding your support – it showed the government just how much you care about young carers future.

FairStartWe met outside the offices where I took some photos then we all went inside to give the Fair Start petition to the very lovely people at reception to be delivered to the Minister.

After lunch Ben, Carers Trust’s Policy and Public Affairs Manager turned Tour Guide and took us around Whitehall and inside Parliament to show the young carers how and where the decisions are made that affect their lives.

It was also a day of celebrity spotting – we saw Ed Milliband and Ed Balls walking past which was pretty exciting but the best spot was definitely Jason Donovan on his bike (sorry Eds!)

Although the petition has been given to the Minister this isn’t the end of the Fair Start campaign. We are awaiting the outcome of the General Election then seeing opportunities this can give us. We won’t stop campaigning until we know that all young carers are getting the support they need at school.

This isn’t the kind of care we polan to incorporate within The Care Locker, although I’m becoming increasingly passionate about the subject of young carers. There are so many of them!
