Park the charges for carers

For many unpaid carers, making regular trips to the local hospital is just a routine part of their week – like getting in the shopping or paying the bills. It’s what they have to do to make sure the person they care for is getting the treatment and support they need.

We don’t think anyone who provides such essential care should have to pay for doing so.

Yet, that’s the reality for millions of carers up and down the country who face having to pay to park every time they take their friend or family member to hospital. It’s leaving some carers having to fork out up to £500 a week. When you’re already feeling the emotional stress of having to make regular trips to hospital, worrying about whether you’re going to be to afford to park is the last thing you need.

That’s why Carers Trust is supporting the new parliamentary Bill introduced by Julie Cooper MP calling for hospital car parking charges for carers to be scrapped in England. This would bring the country into line with Wales and Scotland and demonstrate a recognition of the stress and difficulties carers can go through in their caring role. It’s an easy, practical change that we can make that could bring relief to millions of carers.

And the great thing is that everyone can help get behind Julie’s campaign.

Julie’s Bill is going to be debated in parliament on 30 October and we need as many MPs as possible to attend the debate and vote in favour of dropping hospital car parking charges for carers.

You can get MPs on side by:

  • Writing to your local MP asking them to back Julie’s Bill.
  • Telling us your own personal experiences of hospital car parking charges, helping to build the case for having them removed.
  • Tweeting your support using one of these pre-written tweets:
    • Proud to support @Julie4Burnley’s campaign to end hospital car parking charges for carers! #ParkTheCharges
    • Thanks @Julie4Burnley using your Private Members Bill to call for an end to hospital car park charges for carers #ParkTheCharges

Thank you for any support you can give to our campaign!
